Overprocessed Foods Study
A recent study done by CNN shows that over processed foods add around 500 calories to your diet everyday which is causing unnecessary weight gain. Less-expensive, easier-to-prepare ultraprocessed foods can make you fat, a new study says. People limited to a diet of primarily highly processed foods ate more calories and gained more weight than when their diet mostly consisted of minimally processed foods.
During a one-month study, 20 healthy adult volunteers stayed at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center, where all their meals were provided to them. For 14 days in turn, they were limited to each diet and told they could eat as much or as little as they liked.
On the ultraprocessed diet, people ate faster while consuming about 500 calories more per day than they did while on the unprocessed diet. All of these lead to higher weight gains for already overweight Americans. They should start buying organic foods that are less processed even if the price is a little bit higher. There are other alternatives to super cheap processed foods that you find in the local safeway, maybe go to your local farmers market and support those farmers!

There was an article I read that was related to the point you make about over processed foods. The basic idea behind it is that fast food is biologically designed to have the physical incentive of a drug, meaning that addiction is a result of the addition of all kinds of sketchy chemicals. I guess the problem with these foods is that they are cheap, and some people cannot afford to buy organic, which is a significant increase in price. to fix this, the government should have greater regulation of the food industry, in terms of what processing their food undergoes.
ReplyDeleteWow 500 extra calories is a lot! It is very difficult to find organic or unprocessed foods because of the amount of foods that are processed nowadays. Amber does make a good point that some people can't afford some of the more expensive, but healthier foods. There are also areas in inner cities for example that just don't have healthy options at all. Lots of families don't have access to farmers markets or even fresh produce that causes them to resort to these heavily over processed foods. As Amber said, I do agree that the government needs to be getting more involved to spread this knowledge and help the people who can't afford or don't have access to fresh, healthy foods.
