Interracial Marriage

Interracial marriage has been a very popular way of life, but it has not always been like in every state if it weren’t for Robert and Mildred Loving. This couple had moved back to Virginia; Robert being a white male and Mildred being a black woman had been arrest for being married in a state where interracial marriage was illegal. They had fought for love and eventually changed the race-based restrictions. Interracial marriage brings our world to a more diverse society. One that everyone can feel welcomed because they know they belong to more. At schools, we see how interracial marriages have contributed to our environment, having diversity camp being an opportunity to experience. Being a part of that experience made me realize that we have classmates of different racial backgrounds that I have never known of.

  1. I love this post! I feel like it really brings to light the issue of interracial marriage, and how that issue is still sometimes prevalent in our society today. I think that interracial marriage is an important topic to address because there has been much discrimination related to it, and how the way people define race manifests itself in things like this. For example, some people were taught by their families that it is not okay to marry someone outside of their own race. Though it would not be a bad thing to do, the fact of the matter is that this issue is still fairly dominant in our society, as people face discrimination just because they decided to marry someone outside of their own race. The fact is, love sees no color. This means that if someone is in love with someone else, and the person they are in love with happens to belong to a different race, it shouldn't matter. How does that affect someone else's life? I think that someone's love interest should not affect others, no matter who it is, what gender they are, or what race they belong to.

  2. I like how you connected the history of interracial marriage to something that you experienced yourself. It shows the impact of interracial still has an effect today, even though it is something that we completely take for granted today. I also never knew that it was one couple that fought to be married that ended the law, so I found that interesting.

  3. I love how you compared your own experience to an issue very evident in today's society. It's a relief that interracial is legal, but it is still definitely a social problem that needs to be further addressed. It is so devastating to know that there are still instances where couples face discrimination simply because they love someone of a different race. Although sometimes this issue is because of culture or simply just how someone was taught as a child, I believe that everyone should grow up knowing that if you love someone, race should not matter. I do not understand why people discriminate interracial couples or marriages, as we are all human; all breathe the same air, and interracial couples are doing no harm whatsoever.
