Mother Violently seperated from toddler during arrest
Jazmine Headly 23-year-old mother was patiently waiting for service at a crowded Brooklyn food stamp office. At this time she was holding her 18-month-old child in her arms and while she was patiently waiting, she asked one of the workers there if they had chairs so she could sit down with her child. However, due to the lack of chairs, she decided to sit on the floor of the crowded office for 2 hours. A few moments later she was confronted by a security guard and she was told that she couldn't sit there. Nyashia Ferguson, an eyewitness says, "the security guard, I guess came over and told her she couldn't sit there. So she's like, 'Where am I going to sit?' She was like, ' I guess you are going to have to stand.' She said, 'Well, I'm not going to stand with my son." Ferguson claims this is when things started to escalate. Moments later the Police were called when Headly refused to leave. At this point, about 3-5 officers were surrounding her trying to hold her down and take away the child from her. She ended up lying face up on the floor during a tug of war over the child. At one point, an officer can be seen on the video pulling her stun gun and pointing it at people in the angry crowd. Headly was charged with obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest, endangering the welfare of a child and trespassing. Days later a Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez decided to drop the charges "in the interest of justice" she was at last freed from jail and she was able to reunite with her son. The Department of Social Services Commissioner Steven Banks said in statment that he would implement re-training on de-escelation for staff, security guards and peace officers.
I cannot believe that over something so simple she was harassed by police enforcement. These police must not have anything better to do with their time if they are simply picking the smallest reason (Sitting on the ground) to attack someone over. This was definitely unjust and I am glad the district attorney released her on behalf of thinking the same thing, if she was in jail for a longer period of time perhaps rioting would have happened as this was possibly done over the color of her skin. As a society, police do not seem to have advanced their ways of treating people of color.
