Kareem Hunt

Kareem Hunt is an NFL player who was a success story up to this point in the NFL. He was an underdog running back out of a small school called Toledo. Not highly recruited, not highly favored to make it in the National Football League. Because of this, his success on the Kansas City Chiefs was very exciting as the whole league got behind his success. Unfortunately, his successes have ended, he is no longer on a roster, and who knows if he will be able to make it back because of one major mistake that should never have happened.

Recently a video was discovered of Kareem Hunt shoving and kicking a woman in a hotel hallway. In the video, Kareem's friends attempt to stop him from attacking the woman but he persistently confronts her eventually pushing down another man and the girl to the ground. The Kansas City Chiefs cut Kareem Hunt because of the video because it contradicted lies he had told them before the season had started where he denied these allegations.
Kareem Hunt's domestic violence incident is not uncommon for the NFL. Other famous players like Adrian Peterson and Ray Rice who happens to wear the same number as Kareem have a history of domestic violence. This issue is larger than just Kareem. It is a culture either created through the NFL or American society that has not directly promoted domestic abuse but it has promoted dominance and violence. On top of that, a factor to be considered is CTE which has caused reckless emotions like rage in athletes due to repetitive head trauma. Hopefully this brings awareness to the issue and things begin to finally change when they didn't under previous athletic star incidents

  1. Good blog post Mateo. I actually learned that Kareem Hunt has been at least been accused of being a aprt orf more than ust this one instance of domestic abuse. This first known case was actually a month before the one you wrote bout. TMZ obtained video of the incident, which shows Hunt being restrained by a security guard as a crowd is gathered around. TMZ reported that after the alleged fight, a 37-year-old man said he had to be hospitalized with a broken rib and broken nose. He filed a police report, but cops reportedly said the victim eventually stopped cooperating so no charges were filed. There is also a third report where he was accused of punching a 23-year-old man in the face and in response to all of this Hunt has released an apology however I'm not sure how much this will actually do.

  2. I think that it is super important that you connected this incident to the greater NFL culture. Football obviously is a contact sport that focuses on tackling others. It is extremely physical and often fights break out on the field between players. It is their job as NFL players to be strong and tough and extremely physical. This could easily translate over into their lives as they have been taught and programmed to react physically as they do on the field. This also brings up the issue of over masculinity and being powerful especially over women. Not saying that is what CAUSED this incident but that football culture is important to keep in mind when thinking of issues that could have contributed. Interesting post.

  3. I agree with what you are saying about the football culture. Because football is way much more of a physical sport than others, the players might be more aggressive in general. Just because they act a way on the field does tnot mean that they can act that way in public. Especially in the NFL where they practice e sport much and kind of make football their whole life, they act like they are always in football player mode and I think hat that mentality might convince them to carry out such actions like this. I am not saying that football is bad but rather that there players need to control their love for the sport when In public.
