frat boy wont get prison
At a 2016 frat party Jacob Anderson drugged and raped a young woman. The woman spoke up and jacob was arrested and sent to trial. a plea agreement allowed the former Baylor University student to plead no contest to a lesser charge of unlawful restraint. This means that he has to spend 3 years on probation and if he completes it he will not spend a day in prison. Anderson will have to complete alcohol, drug and psychological treatment plans. But he won't have to register as a sex offender in Texas. This angered the woman who had the courage to come forward with the rape. She said that the prosecutor and jury seemed to be victim blaming and did not want to put this man behind bars. After the trial and the plea deal she wrote this, "Jacob Anderson and all rapists who get away with their crimes will never be cured, never change. If anything they will be emboldened by their power over women and their ability to escape justice and punishment. If I had the courage to come back to Waco and face my rapist and testify, you could at least have had enough respect for me to show up today."
She really doesnt want this to happen to other girls and its unfortunate that she had to deal with such a horrible event in her life. Theres nothing more to do at this point.

I remember reading about this and thinking it would make a really good blog post. It shows how privilege really effects how the justice system treats someone. When we discussed plea deals in class, we saw that lower income African-American woman was told to chose a plea deal, was sent to prison, and has this on her record forever, effecting her job prospects. Here, is a rich white college student who is barely punished, not given jail time, and not even forced to register on the sex offender list for his crimes. This stops people from being alerted to the fact that he is a rapist and could put other people at risk.
ReplyDeleteI remember hearing about this recently and when I heard about it, I was really disgusted at the fact that he doesn't get punishment for what he did besides 3 years of probation. It's very disturbing to hear that there has been many rapists like him who get away with it and they will never get cured and that may never change. This would be an example of how privilege really does affect how the Justice system treats someone in his case because he is a rich white college student.
ReplyDeleteFor people like this, I think they should have to wear a shirt around everyday that says, "I'm a rapist." Because I agree with the victim, it is unlikely that the person will change. I know lots of people who come straight back from rehab and do drugs agains - so what's to say that he will come back from psychotherapy and rape again? I don't trust him, and I don't trust the system that let him go free.
