Gangs
Gangs, in general, are normally considered to be drug dealers and killers. But we don’t know is how they started. The one group that was created was during the 1990s which had an increase in police brutality. This group is called Continous Revolution in Progress (CRIP), these young adults were a follow-up of the Black Panthers. I believe that gangs do protect their own and gangs aren’t bad if they are doing things that think will protect their families or friends. In a documentary I watched in class, we see why these groups were created. This is because people needed someone to protect their families from the police and violence such as riots.
Many of the African American gangs that formed in Los Angeles from the 1950s to the 1960s first began as a means of protection from the other gangs that existed and frequently threatened violence toward African Americans. The gangs that would become more violent, specifically the Crips and the Bloods, formed in the late 1960s. The Crips originated first, and many were afraid of it, as the gang became associated with more criminal activity, like assaults and robberies. In response to the formation of the Crips, the Bloods were one of the gangs that formed. The Crips and the Bloods were rival gangs and quickly became more territorial, especially once drug trafficking became a huge priority within these communities, as a way to make money, and the gangs gained many members.

To add on to your claim, I think most gang members joined their gangs because they did not feel a sense of belonging in their community. It mentioned in a video that a boy joined his gang because he wanted a sense of authority. I think most gang members just want someone to connect with since their families did not bring them up in such a good manner. To combat this, I think people living in poverty should have a community within themselves. This would help them connect with others within the community, while also avoiding the negative side effects that come along by joining a gang.
