Pregnant 11-year-old rape victim denied abortion
In Ohio, an 11-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a 26-year-old multiple times, leaving her pregnant. The state law passed in April says unfortunate victims like this young girl will not have a choice to have an abortion. They will have fully carry out their term and deliver their rapist's baby. This state law passed will prohibit women from getting an abortion after a fetal heartbeat is detected, which is about 6 weeks into a pregnancy. When the Ohio Governor, Mike DeWine signed the bill, he focused on the rights of the fetus, " The essential function of government is to protect the most vulnerable among us, even those who don't have a voice."
According to data the FBI have compiled, more than 4,000 women were raped in Ohio in 2017. More than 800 women were assaulted by a family member. For future reference, if women became pregnant as a result of the crimes, the bill will prohibit receiving an abortion after 6 weeks, which is before most women are aware they are pregnant.
Regarding the incident of the 11-year-old victim, a report filed by the local police department with an interview with an employee of a pregnancy care center, stated that a large portion of the responsibility of this girl's rape and pregnancy was the victim's own fault. This employee described the girl as "rebellious", as she refused to listen to her mother and, "ran away from home all the time."
