Hate Crimes Against LGBTQ

The Federal Bureau of Investigation released hate crime statistics for 2017 towards the LGBTQ community. A disturbing increase of 17 percent was reported and released during the start of Transgender Awareness week. As stated by the FBI,  reporting hate crimes is not mandatory, therefore the numbers are most likely undercounted.  Overall 7,175 hate crimes were reported and 1,130 of those were based on sexual orientation bias and 120 on gender bias.  Incidents that were reported on gender identity bias, 106 of transgender people were targeted.

Anti-transgender violence remains an epidemic. In 2017, there was a report of tragic deaths of 29 transgender individuals, which is the highest number ever recorded in a single year. FBI reports most likely represent a fraction of the significant violence that occurs against these minority groups. Thousands of law enforcement agencies have not submitted any data, therefore the FBI is unable to paint a complete picture of the hate crimes committed.

The HCR, and advocate for hate crime prevention, is known to be working the with FBI to continuously update the crime reporting, "from providing training materials to sharing details on hate crimes when they occur."
