Political Satire is my News Source

I don't think I have ever been on the CNN website, I hardly visit the NY Times, and the only thing I know about Fox News is that they called three Central American countries "Mexican Countries."
But, I know about the Mueller report, and I know what's happening in Congress most of the time. How? Trevor Noah, Stephen Colbert, and John Oliver.

Whenever my dad sees the late night talk show host up on our TV screen, he gets a little irritated and says something along the lines of "They're perpetuating the problem." But, for people like me, these guys are the only reason I know about anything going on in government.

So, is political satire a heap of crap that's perpetuating the problem? Or, is there some worth to it?
No two people could have the same stance on this issue, but I like to listen to people make fun of everything while still giving me information. It's much better than watching people yell at each other on real news, or not knowing the news at all.

  1. Political satire is one of the few ways that many of us teenagers actually get drawn into potentially boring politics. I love watching Trevor Noah etc... because they use reliable sources for their opinions and leave discussions open for us to conclude our own opinions. Many have also said that with their satire they seduce us with their views that we dont 100% are accurate. However I find myself disagreeing with them often and I believe that the style of their platform allows the viewer to conclude their own ideas based off o their information. On top of this I think its important to read sources from all sides of the political spectrum to get their ideas and where they are coming from in order to further our political basis and give us a more informed group of voters as a nation.

  2. In one sense, I really enjoy political satire, mostly Colbert, and I think it's far more interesting than reading articles that just namedrop and make everything tiring. However, I can see your dad's point - he probably wishes people would be able to view political events as more serious, since satire kind of diminishes the very real impact of these events. Unfortunately, I think today's politics blurs the line between reality and comedy, which makes getting news from another source annoying/not fun.

  3. My dad always watches CNN and he shares what he finds everyday at the dinner table. And hes also a funny guy so I really do enjoy the political satire and witty comments he makes about how dumb trump can be sometimes. I have also watched a bunch of trevor noah because he is my favorite talk show host and is super funny.
