Is the Demand for $2 Million Morally Right?

The Trump Administration was billed two million dollars from North Korea to cover the costs of the medical care of American student Otto Warmbier. Warmbier was jailed in North Korea in December of 2015 while on a tour with his classmates from the University of Virginia. He was arrested for charges in regards to taking down a propaganda poster in a hotel. He was sentenced to 15 years of prison and hard labor, but fell into a coma during his detention. American doctors were never able to determine the cause. The big question is whether or not Kim Jong-un was truly clueless about the US student or not?Donald Trump has defended North Korean leader against any accusations of knowingly harming the student who died after being jailed by North Korea. Warmbier was returned to the US in a coma in June 2017, but died days later. Joseph Yun, the former special representitive for North Korea, traveled to Pyongyang to negotiate for his release. An accompanying American doctor examined Mr. Warmbier, who had been comatose for most of his 17 months in prison. North Korean officials presented Mr. Yun with the $2 million bill and asked him to sign an agreement to pay it before leaving with Mr. Warmbier back to the states. In December, Mr. Warmbier's parents sued North Korea in an American Court over their sons death and were rewarded with $501 million. Yet, it is unlikely that the parents will ever collect the money from Kim's government.

  1. Great blog post on something that does not happen everyday. It is interesting to see the mistreatment of a korean prisoner and to see that they want money from Kim Jong un and his corrupt government. I think they should pay the man because he deserves it but most likely I think the Koreans will give him nothing because they can.
