Motke Zeidel:how he escaped an extermination camp
In January of 1944 there was a 18 year old named Motke Zeidel, at this time he had lived the previous two years living in the Vilnius Ghetto in Lithuania. in January of 1941 a vehicle came to a halt and Motke was hoarded onto a truck shackled. During the prior year or so he had talked to a couple of other Jewish Lithuanians who had escaped who were telling stories of the horrors at the Ponar concentration camp. They claimed that the were at a camp in the middle of the forest where people were shot for no reason, and where dead bodies were stacked very high. They also were talking about mothers pleading for the Nazi's to save their innocent children from execution but to no avail. So when Motke arrived in the camp in Ponar he realized that he should try to escape or die trying. So Motke joined a group that was planning their escape from the camp. Dogim who was another prisoner was the ringleader. Once they emerged from the tunnel they would cut a hole in the fence and run. And to cover up the break in the fence with a white cloth to show the next person where to run to. There was about 10 people in total in this group. And about 8 groups. Zeidel's group picked April 15th for the escape and their plan was to escape at night. Their group once they broke thru the fence, just ran all night, Motke was never captured again by the Nazis. In 1945 Motke immigrated to Israel, and he served in Israel's war for independence. Motke Zeidel has lived a peacful life since and has 3 kids and 6 grandchildren.
This is a really interesting story about Motke Zeidel and his experience at the Ponar concentration camp. I think the way that they planned to escape was really brave and smart. This story is similar to Witold Pilecki, he also escaped a concentration camp but this one was in Aushwitz. Except compared to this story, he volunteered to go to Aushwitz to see if the rumors were true and It was also very brave of him to to that. He was able to escape successfully just like Motke Zeidel.
ReplyDeleteWithold Pilecki was successful in getting out but not in getting the world to believe him at that time. That was the unfortunate part.
