innocent and poor or rich and guilty?
At times there is injustice in America, sometimes people spend their life in prison for a crime they did not commit, sometimes people get away with murder. In the OJ Simpson case we say OJ get away with a crime that the evidence showed his guilt in my opinion. In the case of Emmitt Till, his killers were acquitted in 1955 even though they admitted to committing the crime, which was first degree murder. But in the case of Anthony Ray Hinton a poor black Alabama man who went to death row for a crime he did not commit went to prison for 28 years before being exonerated in 2015. In the case of Anthony Ray Hinton. They gave him an atrocious public defender, who did not do much to prepare for the case. Not only that but the state's main evidence was the gun which was used in the murder. The state had a one eye blind "expert witness" testify for his defense, the guy was not even a firearms expert, he was quickly taken apart by the prosecution. Anthony Ray Hinton was on his graveyard shift at this time, which was confirmed by many witnesses. But yet, he was found guilty in 1986. Then in 2000, his defense team which consisted of one FBI firearms expert tried to beg the Alabama state attorney William Pryor to retest the bullets. The FBI expert thought himself that the bullets did not match. But Pryor refused, and it was not until 2014 that the Supreme court of Alabama forced them to retest the bullets which resulted in Hinton's exoneration. And oh DONALD TRUMP had him on a short list for the Supreme court vacancy last year. Can you imagine we having a lazy justice like that, who would rather have an innocent man in prison for 15 years as opposed to taking an hour to retest the bullets. Hinton wasted 28 years of his life in Holman Correctional facility because he could not pay for an adequate defense. Where as OJ Simpson got around a bloody glove, a motive and bloody footprints. Mississippi businessman J.W. Milan who confessed to maiming 14 year old Emmitt till got away with murder without spending one day in prison. The question is "guilty and rich or innocent and poor". ?
This is a really interesting post and the examples show the issue very clearly with the injustices that happen in our justice system. There are so many factors that play into cases rather than guilt or innocence like money and race that make our justice system unfair. I think the fact that there are public defenders in our system is great because it ensures that everyone has a lawyer and a possibility of fighting their case but we need to have ones that are more invested in their job and work harder in order for them to be worth it.
