French: Yellow Vest Movement

The Yellow Vest movement in France is a grassroots populist movement fighting for "economic justice" since November of 2018 after Emmanuel Macro became the president of France. They began a huge movement after an online petition raised nearly 1 million supporters from that alone. There first protest was on November 17th of 2018. There anger stems from the tax law changes implemented by the new left leaning president Macron and have caused increasing levels of antisemitism that has been reported from French Jews as increasingly concerning. One of the names the yellow jackets call Macron is President Rothschild, a derogatory nickname towards a jew referring to Macron's banking background which aligns with the stereotype of Jews running the banking business. They blame the rich Jews of the country for bringing the liberal Macron to power, and saying that he is destroying the working class integrity of France. They say that they are to blame for Macron nullifying taxes on the rich and the current economic situation.
It is a growing theme from the globalization and liberalization  of the world in general that alt-right groups spring up rebelling against the new political ideas that they feel have left them feeling betrayed and neglected by the mainstream politicians in the last few decades. There resort to violence has significantly increased as they feel their voices are not heard with taxes continuing to rise. They have even become angered by a new law implemented by the Macron lead government reducing the speed limit on two lane roads to 80 kilometers per hour. Will the movement continue to grow, affecting future elections and political ideas being implemented? It is too soon to tell but what we know for sure is that they will not go away easily.

  1. This week marked the 16th straight weekend of protests by the Yellow Vests. They continue to see the government as favoring the rich and despite Macron's calls for peace and calling their protests entirely "unacceptable" they continue. Sophie Tissier, one of the coordinators of the Paris protests, told The Associated Press that “we keep protesting every Saturday because Macron doesn’t respond at all to the yellow vests’ demands. We want to rebuild our democracy and change today’s political system.”

  2. This is yet another representation of the rise of nationalism in the world today. I understand why these people are protesting - economics - but I think that it is appalling that they are taking it out on the Jewish upper class. Haven't the Jewish people of Europe been marginalized enough?
