US mexican border altercations

For the past few days there has been lots of tension between U.S border patrol and migrants trying to enter the U.S illegally. migrants from different areas of central america had traveled over 3,500 miles on foot in order to try to cross the border, majority which came from honduras. This started off as a peaceful protest for those migrants seeking asylum, the protection granted by a nation to someone who has left their native country as a refugee. Some said they were fleeing persecution in their home countries and hoped to find safety in the United States. Many other migrants said they were escaping violence or searching for work to provide for their families, which over time turned into chaos at the border. This chaos started because the protesters were met and stopped by mexican police which caused frustration to the point where everyone started running in different directions managing to get passed the police. Those who ran to try and cross the border were slowed down by the U.S border patrol. They were using tear gas to stop the migrants from crossing the border but they said that they were only defending themselves from rocks being thrown although they had tactical gear and helmets. This affected everyone in the radius of half a mile including children. When the Rodney King beating was televised, riots started to occur so maybe seeing this can create the same result.

  1. I read another blog post detailing the same events, focusing more of the use of tear gas on children, which caused a lot of outrage. I thought it was very interesting how you compared this border altercations to the Rodeny King Riots. The whole gist of the Rodney King Riots was that it wasnt a single event that led to the riots. It was a long history of social tensions in Los Angeles that spurred on the riots. In this situation, you can currently see the social tensions among immigrants and America. This beginning with our president. Recently, the whol Caravan scandal was a huge social issue among different groups in America. Overall, I dont think that this Altercation will have the same effects as Rodney King, however, it does posses similar traits.

  2. I agree with this post and the comment above. I think that small events like these will eventually lead to one big event, such as the Rodney King one. I think the main thing we have to do as a community is face the president and try to make him stop using actions like this against the others. The Mexican immigrants, especially the ones with young children are not doing anything to harm Americans so it makes me wonder why we would treat them in such a hostile manner if they have not done anything to start the fight.
