This article written by Maggie Fox covers the same story about the CBD study with Dr. Devinsky, but also shared the story of a 13 year old boy named Jack Ziolkowski. Jack had been an ordinary, normal boy until first grade. On Jack’s first day of first grade, he suffered a massive seizure and had to go to the hospital. He was having seizure after seizure and doctors had no idea what was causing them. Jack was later diagnosed with Dravet syndrome, a rare genetic dysfunction of the brain which causes frequent and aggressive seizures. After his diagnosis, he was quickly limited to a wheelchair and became dependent on his mom to feed and bathe him. With no treatment or cure, Jack and his mother were stuck. They dealt with the pain until they found out about a study being done by Dr. Orrin Devinsky at New York University. This study brought in 120 patients suffering from Dravet syndrome to determine whether medical cannabidiol is a good form of treatment for seizures that kids with Dravet syndrome suffer. Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is a compound in cannabis that is most effective in treating pain and illness. CBD does not give the psychoactive “high” or “stoned” feeling that THC gives. Jack’s mother quickly applied, and Jack was chosen as one of the patients in the study. Out of the 120 patients, 60 were given CBD oil to be consumed orally every day for 14 weeks, and the other 60 were given a placebo oil. Jack was given the CBD and after taking it, Jack went seizure free for six months, and now rarely suffers from them. He returned to walking, talking, and eating on his own. He even started playing sports and riding skateboards. Jack is just one of the hundreds of children suffering from Dravet syndrome whose lives have been completely transformed by the use of medical cannabis. Unfortunately, there are still 21 states where medical marijuana is illegal, and without access to the drug, many kids suffering from Dravet syndrome will never find a successful treatment. Although medical cannabis use has some bad stigmas, it also has many pharmaceutical benefits and is far less deleterious compared to other drugs. If medical cannabis were to be made legal in all 50 states, kids like Jack would be able to receive the treatment they need to live a happy and healthy life.
