police throwing away rape kits
In a new CIA investigation due to the MeToo movement and other reasons they have found that police have thrown away rape kits. These rape kits show signs of rape and have been thrown out for many different reasons from not being able to have time and resources to prosecute or the victim has dropped charges and given up. Some of these girls feel like they cant come forward because of the victim blaming or other things that make them feel like they should not bring this up. Victims have told their stories about how they are treated after they try to come forward on rape accusations and they are not pretty. Some problems people have with the police deciding which rape kits to throw away is the police are not serious about ending rapes and putting a stop to such a degrading crime that happens more than people think. Each of these kits is a victim and it is sad to think that these women had to go through such a horrible event and society is not making it any easier for these women to come forward. The rape kits being thrown away have serious implications on the cases that are being put into court as sometimes they are authorized to be thrown away then the police and court realize they need that as evidence later.

ReplyDeleteI think that not enough positive energy is being put into solving the issue of rape. I feel like talking about it and educating young people in school, such as ourselves can only do so much when in reality so little is done to discourage this behavior. They may talk about it but barely any action is taken. The banning of rape kits is an issue within itself. Rape kits aren’t always reliable and are sometimes hard to use, as the victim needs time to deal with the circumstances themselves and come to terms with it, and by the time they've done that the rape kit may not be valid. I think that if police are going to throw away the rape kits that they should find an alternative solution, one that is better for the victim or at least take the victims seriously and take legal action against them. The fact that rape is such a light subject in the court of law and on the police’s mind just ends up in cases of bullying and sometimes even suicide, as seen in Audrie and Daisy, and that’s an unacceptable tragedy.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with Camille on this one. The American society has made the subject of rape extremely dangerous to touch on so that when we do it is very carefully argued. Because of this alot of people havent realized how serious of a problem it is in our society so the measures taken to counter act the issue are not as proactive as they are urgently needed to be. The police officers throwing away the rape kits as u described christian is inexplicably frustrating that they would ruin someones life. These actions are a representation of the mentality and climate around the subject of rape and assault.
