Daniel Hernandez Facing Jail Time: Racketeering, Gun Charges, And more

22-year-old-rapper, who is well known as "Tekashi 69" was arrested earlier this month and faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 32 years in prison to as much as life. He had been previously involved in a case of sexual misconduct with a 13-year-old and placed on probation, warned by the judge that if one more felony were to be put on his name, he would be sent straight to prison. As his fame began to rise internationally, his legal history began to do so as well. Racketeering is when people use criminal actions to repeatedly take money from others, and most likely are associated with protection rackets. He is facing a number of charges including drug dealing, racketeering, gang involvement, armed robbery, and a conspiracy to commit murder charge. These charges are a result of a five year investigation into the criminal activities of the New York Bloods street gang known as "Nine Trey Bloods" of which this "Star" is a member of. His crew had held up a rival gang member at gun point, while Hernandez allegedly sat in a nearby vehicle filming the entire incident. During investigation, the stolen items were found in his possession in his own home. He was charged with possession of an AR-15, more evidence in support of his gang activity. Beyond the federal prison time he faces, the arrest also likely violated terms of his preexisting probation for sex acts with a child. The indictment of his case read, "Members and associates of the Enterprise promoted and celebrated the criminal conduct of the Enterprise, namely narcotics distribution, acts involving violence, and the use of firearms, in music and on social media". Not only was Hernandez convicted but his team was as well. Many celebrities get the easy way out due to their social stature and money, surprisingly Hernandez does not fall under this category. Sources say despite his lawyer offering a large sum of money, his bail was denied and his well deserved time will in fact be served. Should record labels spend more time considering behavior of the stars they sign?

  1. Thinking about your question at the end, I do believe record labels should consider behavior, as I believe they already do. I am not sure if Tekashi 69 was signed to a record label, but if he was I believe that the label should have put more energy into helping him clear his name.

  2. You mentioned at the end that unlike a lot of wealthy celebrities, he was not able to get out of the charges placed on him. I think for rappers, often they are not seen as heroes as most other celebrities are, at least (usually) by older adults or members of law enforcement. In OJ's case, he was a football star, and the police officers who turned the other way when he escaped arrest were probably fans. Fans of rappers are usually teenagers, who don't have much political clout to allow him to avoid charges.
