White Privilege
When the thought or discussion of the “white privilege” comes up, most people mainly the minority group would say how it is unfair. In my opinion, I would say it is also unfair, but I think about it in a different way, because it exists, I would be like some majority of white people and take advantage of it. If I have been given the same privilege, I would use it to my advantage because I can. I remember watching this experiment video of young children given two choices of which doll they would prefer. These children all came from different races, but the majority would choose the white doll instead of the black doll. These children chose the white doll because they already understand that the white race is most likely to be chosen. This explains a lot about how society forms children and their perspective on race and other things about the world.
When it comes to white privilege, some white people tend to get defensive about the subject because they may view is as an accusation, and that makes them uncomfortable. Sometimes, white people deny that they have white privilege because they do not want to somehow seem racist by considering that their natural way of life may be contributing to the problem even if they, themselves, genuinely do not view other races as inferior. However, when white people refuse to acknowledge that they do have privilege because of their race and face the discomfort of acknowledging this fact, it worsens the problem of racial inequality. It is easy for white people, if they simply decide to do so, to ignore the fact that they have white privilege and are generally treated better in society, as truly working to understand their own privilege and how others lack the same opportunity and sense of security brings discomfort. Yet, people of color face discomfort every day; people who are not classified by society as white, unlike those who are, do not have a choice of whether they are willing to face the discomfort that may accompany their race. It is true that nobody gets to choose what race he or she is born into or whether he or she gets to live with white privilege. Nonetheless, the fact that part of white privilege consists of the opportunity to choose whether or not to face the truth and work towards understanding the reality of racial inequality, while people of color are forced to face the reality of racial inequality and the consequences of the ignorance of some white people, illustrates why the issue is so complex and difficult to solve.
