White Privilege

There is something fundamental that affects people of other races; something that White people usually don't give a second thought. That thing is white privilege. White privilege is "the societal privilege that benefits people whom society identifies as white." White people, especially white males, know that they have a pretty big advantage over other races, but the question becomes, if you know you have an advantage, would you give it up for someone who doesn't? This question is very important to explore and think about because it can help us determine whether or not we even realize that we have certain advantages over others. If White people continue not think about the important things that set us apart from other races, we cannot possibly be able to get to a more equal world. One example of White privilege is that white people can walk around the streets at night without anyone becoming suspicious of them, or thinking that they are up to no good. Other races, particularly African Americans, do not have this luxury most of the time. Another example of White privilege is white people typically can be sure that when they get pulled over, they are not getting pulled over because of their race. In contrast, sometimes when black people get pulled over by police officers, they can never quite be sure whether or not they got pulled over because of their race. This is a very sad fact, and I feel very upset that this is the world we live in. It is time for us to take a stand, and to help prevent this from happening anymore. The world isn't fair, but I think there are ways to make it a more equal place for everyone, no matter their race, gender, religion, etc.

  1. You brought up some really good questions in this blog post, which expanded off of the ones we talked about in class. The examples you used also helped to show why this exists and why it is a problem
