Racial Intolerance: Eric Striker's Point of View

Eric Striker, a prominent African-American football player, sparked conversations at universities across the nation about racial intolerance. It all started the day Striker saw the video of the SAE fraternity at Oklahoma University singing a racist chant about African Americans. Striker sent a Snapchat video of himself dissing the fraternity, calling them "phony," and a good many other things. He felt like they were completely ignorant about what African Americans had been through: lynchings, slavery, etc. His video sent shockwaves throughout the nation. Through the video, Striker had brought up the subject of racial intolerance; not directly, but not in a subtle way either. Many African American football players at universities around the country started talking about their experiences of being black athletes, and how the people around them often assumed that no matter what they wore, even if they weren't athletes, they were automatically labeled as football players. The  video also sparked conversations about police brutality towards African Americans, and how only a select few had had good experiences with police. One football player, Derrick Malone, talked about how a police officer taught him how to change his tire. This small act made him realize that all police officers aren't the same, just like all athletes aren't the same, just like all people aren't the same. In the end, most people could come to the overall agreement that Eric Striker did the right thing by speaking up; not only for himself, but also for African Americans everywhere.

  1. I don't really understand how this connect to police brutality. Specifically how it sparked an argument of police brutality. Can you explain a little more?
