Who Was Baby M?
Baby M was a famous court case involving her surrogate mother, Mrs. Whitehead, and her father, Mr. Stern. Baby M was conceived using an egg from Mrs. Whitehead, and a sperm from Mr. Stern. Mr. Stern and his wife paid Mrs. Whitehead to carry and give birth to Baby M. Mrs. Whitehead thought at the time that she would be able to give Baby M to her parents when she gave birth, but as it turned out, she couldn't. She asked Mr. Stern and his wife if she could keep Baby M with her for a few days. When she didn't bring her back, Mr. Stern and his wife called the police. While the police were searching the house, Mrs. Whitehead passed the baby out the window to her husband, and they took the baby home with them. Mr. Stern called upon his lawyer to try to get his daughter back. After a long custody battle in court, Mrs. Whitehead and her husband won custody of Baby M. The Sterns, very distraught by the decision, sued Mrs. Whitehead. When she turned 18, Baby M, whose real name is Melissa, chose to cut off all contact with Mrs. Whitehead, as she considered the Sterns to be her real family. This is a really complicated issue because in today's world, we have an invitro option. This means that scientists simply put a woman's egg and a man's sperm into a test tube. Once the baby is conceived, the zygote is surgically implanted into the woman's body. In conclusion, the question becomes, is surrogacy really the answer, or should people just go exclusively invitro when they can't biologically have children?
